‘A Ring of Rushes’ Exhibition

Higher Bridges Gallery 11th-20th June 2010

In this exhibition Helen has been addressing the folk memory of those who lived around the Fermanagh lakes, and those who still live in the area. In her work she also deconstructs the books of Shan Bullock who wrote over twenty novels such as The Loughsiders, based on the area around Crom Castle on Upper Lough Erne. The names of the people and places were often changed by the writer.

Helen’s quest to explore the landscape and characters of the lakeside has led to as reflection on change and continuity, progress and essence, the fragility and resilience and the relationship between them.

Time passes, Shan Bullock’s late victorian characters faced challenges, and yet the watery skies of the lake remain unchanged.

Helen’s work has undergone a series of changes in recent years. Primarily a painter, she has become increasingly interested in exploring different mediums, materials and scale, her work is currently characterised by large canvas, paper or wood supports, and painted with oils or gouache. the passage of time is explored by the breaking up of the image and putting together again, exploring the differences and the similarities. All revolve around a love of the wild landscape.
